Gardening in the Desert
A snapshot of my life recently:
-Take job as an independent consultant for industrial agriculture projects.
-Start reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.
-Reminded of childhood dream to be Laura Ingalls Wilder and live on a farm
-Make a friend who is trying to transform her affluent suburban life into a sustainable, local, and relationship centered life. At the age of 49. So this isn't just us young crazies. She got a cheese-making kit for her birthday. I wish I could live in her basement and learn from her.
-Continue reading A, V, M; now I want to learn to garden, make cheese, and cook everything from scratch.
-Reminded of making pasta noodles from scratch as a kid...I hope I do this again one day.
-Accept job in Nevada that will split my time between camping in the desert and living in Vegas.
-Still reading A, V, M; starting to wonder if it is possible to garden or eat locally in the middle of desert. Also wondering if I can do this on my Americorps salary.
-Watch Rachael Ray boast about the availability of food from all over the world in NYC. Struck by the enormity and sadness of that situation. The Big Apple is not the Local Apple.
-Still exploring what it will mean to live in an ecosystem-friendly manner in the desert, a place that nature seems to be telling us we ought not reside.
